Encryption on multi-disc installer

Wed Oct 28, 2020 1:45 pm

I'm currently trying to find a way to encrypt my installation files across a multi-disc installer. It currently takes 3 dual layer DVDs to hold my installer, so I'm thinking LZMA compression isn't going to shrink me down to a single disk. Is there anything in the works to encrypt the CAB files when using multiple volumes? Or something equivalent?

Hello and welcome to our forums,

In order to achieve that, you can use the "Multiple Volumes" option.

Hope that helps!

Missed this response! I thought it would email when you replied. I only see the "Encrypt Archive" option with the LZMA compression option, which disables the Multiple Volumes option...what am I missing?

Hello,

The "Multiple Volumes" option is available for the "Archive installation files into CAB files" option.

The problem is that my security team is requesting that I encrypt the data I'm delivering in the installer, which the CAB files do not do. As I have it now, I can just open up the .cab file and pull files out as I wish.

Hello,

You are indeed right. A CAB file is simply an "archive" containing the files, which you can take out anytime.

The "Multiple Volumes" option is only available with the "Archive installation files using CAB files" option and, unfortunately, CAB files can not be password protected.

With the US government pushing its contractors to CMMC standardization and more secure deliveries, is there any plans to add this functionality to a future release? (Please?😁)

Hello,

I have forwarded this to our development team for further investigation - i.e. if it is possible to add the "Multiple Volumes" support (or something similar) to the "LZMA Compression" option.

I will let you know once I get any feedback from our development team. :)

Best regards,

Hello,
I have forwarded this to our development team for further investigation - i.e. if it is possible to add the "Multiple Volumes" support (or something similar) to the "LZMA Compression" option.
Unfortunately, it looks like we can not mix "Multiple Volumes" and non MSI compressing options (LZMA) because Windows Installer does not allow intervention during files extraction.

Thank you for your understading!
